STORY/REFLECTION TIME!! Can you believe this year marks 3 years since I started doing photography fulltime as Holton Media... because I can't!! My how time has flown by! In this short time, I have had the honor of growing a local photography business, having photographs featured and even place in exhibits, and even started selling my nature work. Y'all... I never in my wildest dreams thought I would get to do this for a living. I have sold my work at almost every First Friday in Brunswick (weather and health permitting) for officially one year. I have to say, it has been the most exciting and most terrifying year of my photography life so far. I have always been afraid of putting my work out there for others to see. But so many of you have sent me encouraging messages, ordered prints, or gone to my shows and I can't begin to express how thankful I am for all of you. This year has also introduced some unexpected health issues in my life that have added some challenges and have limited my ability to get out and take nature photos as often. I have good days and bad days, but please know that I'm not going to let them stop me from doing what I love. While there are no answers as of yet, I know the doctors are doing everything they can to find the source of the pain. There are several projects already in the works including the 2024 calendars, new prints, products and more. But my biggest goal in looking to the future, is to save up some funds for a new tent and display walls to make my booth even better and hopefully participate in some larger craft shows in 2024. As I’m standing here printing and matting some photos, I always have to stop and reflect on this particular one. If you’ve been following my work for awhile now then this picture is probably familiar to you. This is the photograph that started it all. A dear friend of mine was mentoring me on how to take pictures. The morning before a hurricane was supposed to make landfall on Driftwood Beach, my friend asked me if I wanted to go photograph sunrise, and of course I said yes. We went, photographed the beach that morning, then evacuated until the hurricane had passed. During the evacuation, I happened to evacuate to Atlanta and got the chance to visit my mom in her assisted living facility. It had become tradition for me to show her the pictures I was taking and she would tell me which ones she liked and which ones she didn’t. When I showed her this one, she instantly let out her infamous “ooooooooh!” and had the biggest grin on her face. From that day forward, I always tried to capture beautiful sunrises or landscapes for her. Eventually, this photograph was converted into a puzzle that we were able to work on together when she later moved to Jacksonville. When she passed away in 2020, I was ready to give up on photography entirely. But everyone’s love and support encouraged me to press on and keep improving my craft. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for continuing to send your encouraging words and showing your support through purchasing photos or sharing on social media! 🦝 I tend to walk quite a bit of nature trails trying to photograph the local wildlife. And during one of my recent walks I found this little bandit on the side of the trail 🦝 In all seriousness, this past week, it was announced that a racoon on Jekyll Island was captured and tested positive for rabies. I'm not sure if this is that racoon. This is just a photo I took of one I saw on one of my favorite Jekyll trails this past week. It kept its distance in the marsh. But no matter what, this is a friendly reminder to everyone (including myself) that wildlife is just that... wild! Y'ALL I CAN'T EVEN!!! Story time! There is a trail in Beaufort, SC I try to walk once a week that has become a pretty popular rookery for birds around this time of year. It's the same trail where I found that egret with it's feathers spread out like a peacock a few weeks ago. It's nesting season for a lot of wading birds, so I was planning on coming back frequently. Shortly after is when I sprained my ankle and was told 3-6 week recovery time (and no... I'm still not back to 100%, but getting a little better every day). Yesterday was the first day I had the strength to get outside and walk a trail again, at least a short one anyways... And wouldn't you know it!!
